Deck support posts are a critical component of the structural integrity and overall safety of a deck. Posts in excess of 8' in height should be 6" x 6" or larger.  The images below are of a home located adjacent to a home I inspected.

 The support posts are not only undersized at 4" x 4", they are spliced with thin metal fasteners. This connection is essentially a hinge making this deck vulnerable to collapse.

The vertical drop from the surface of the deck to grade is approximately 15' +-.
